Make 2007 Your Healthiest Year Ever!
by Rebecca Liston, H.D., DSHomMed
Ah…the holidays are upon us! The season of joy, merriment, and, as my Uncle Bill used to say, “Total and complete abandon of my diet.” And as we enjoy this season of pudding, turkey, and all things yummy, we can give thanks to the creators of the holiday calendar (whoever they were). They were wise enough to know that following up the holiday season with the New Year event, complete with the necessity of “resolutions”, was a clever juxtaposition!
Each New Year’s resolution, at least the ones we keep, brings us one step closer to the person we wish to be. For 2007, I ask you to consider resolutions that will help make you the healthiest person you can be. If you would like to improve your health, resolve to do so. If you are blessed to be healthy now, then consider resolving to maintain that state of health and to prevent illness in the future.
Resolutions to Improve Your Health
Here are some examples of great resolutions you could make that would help to improve your state of health:
* Resolve to increase your daily water intake. Water is known to be a key factor in keeping our bodies healthy. Being well-hydrated helps our bodies to remove toxins and “junk” from our system that could otherwise be contributing to our state of illness.
* Resolve to nurture yourself. Sometimes we become ill because we forget about taking care of ourselves. So put your feet up and read that book you have wanted to read for years, or start that walking club in your neighbourhood that you have thought of creating for months now. Do something, even something small, each and every day that you love to do. Caring for yourself in this way will help you to heal.
* Resolve to laugh every single day. Laughter has long been said to be the best medicine. Laughing releases endorphins into our system which speed healing.
* Resolve to “get to the bottom of it.” The human body is designed to be in a state of health and balance. When it becomes unbalanced, due to factors such as fatigue, stress, grief, or unresolved emotional conflict, the body reacts by becoming ill. Until we address the reason that our body became unbalanced in the first place, we cannot get well. An unbalanced body cannot heal regardless of the prescription drugs we may give it. Unless the medicine we are using addresses the root cause of the unbalanced state in the body, we will simply get more and more ill. Resolve to find a wholistic health practitioner such as a homeopath, acupressurist, or therapeutic touch practitioner, that will help you to “get to the bottom of it.” Address the reason why your body is sick and your health will improve dramatically.
Resolutions to Maintain Your Health
Here are some examples of resolutions that you could make to help you to maintain your state of excellent health and prevent future illness:
* Resolve to keep up your routines. If you are enjoying a great state of health, keep it up by continuing with your routines. Whether it’s going to the gym every day, participating in a Laughter Club, or eating organic foods, if you are healthy then it’s working so don’t stop!
* Resolve to help others. If you are healthy, then you must be doing something right! Help those around you that may need some advice, a kind word of support, or a shoulder to lean on. Human beings need one another in this way, particularly when we are not feeling well. So if you are healthy, help someone in need and “share the health.”
* Resolve to get regular “tune-ups.” My friend’s car broke down the other day. The mechanic said to her those famous last words, “If you’d just brought it in for a tune-up at 10000 kms like I told you to, it wouldn’t have broken down!” Well, our bodies are not unlike my friend’s car. And I, as a homeopath, am not unlike the mechanic. I encourage everyone I know to come in for a tune-up every 5000 kms or so! Prevention is the key to maintaining good health. With regular tune-ups, I can ensure that your body is functioning at peak performance, that you are balanced and strong, and that your spark plugs keep on sparking! Sickness and disease have no place in a well-tuned body.
In closing, I would like to wish you a happy holiday season from all of us. We hope 2007 will be your healthiest year ever…naturally!
